Estate Planning Appointment – What to expect!

Planning for the future can feel daunting, especially when it involves your Will, Trusts, or Lasting Powers of Attorney. That’s why I believe it’s important to make the estate planning process clear, relaxed, and easy to understand.

If you’re wondering what actually happens during an estate planning appointment, this guide walks you through it step by step. Whether we meet face-to-face, over the phone, or online, the aim is always the same: to help you feel confident and in control of your decisions.

Step 1: A Friendly Welcome and a Chat About You

The appointment starts with a relaxed conversation. I’ll ask about your personal circumstances, things like:

  • Are you married, single, or in a relationship?
  • Do you have children or dependents?
  • Have you made a Will or LPA before?

This part of the meeting helps me understand your family setup, your goals, and any areas where you might need advice or support.

Step 2: Exploring Your Assets and Wishes

Next, we’ll go through your assets in simple terms, no jargon, no spreadsheets needed. We’ll look at:

  • Property ownership (including main home or rental properties)
  • Savings, investments, pensions
  • Business interests, if relevant
  • Personal possessions or sentimental items

We’ll also discuss who you’d like to:

  • Inherit your estate
  • Be responsible for carrying out your wishes (Executors)
  • Act as guardians for your children (if applicable)
  • Be appointed as your attorneys (for Lasting Power of Attorney documents)

This is your opportunity to ask questions, explore options, and talk through any concerns you might have.

Step 3: Discussing the Right Estate Planning Tools

Once I have a clear picture of your situation, I’ll explain what estate planning solutions may suit your needs. This could include:

  • A Standard Will
  • A Mirror Will for couples
  • A Trust-based Will (to protect beneficiaries or assets)
  • Lasting Powers of Attorney (for health and finances)
  • Will storage and regular updates

I’ll explain the pros and cons of each, along with any costs, so you can make informed decisions without pressure.

Step 4: Confirming Your Instructions

If you feel ready to go ahead, I’ll take your formal instructions at this stage. I’ll summarise what we’ve agreed, confirm who will be included in the documents, and talk you through the next steps, including time-frames for draft Wills or LPAs.

You’ll also have the option to review everything in your own time before anything is finalised.

Step 5: After the Appointment

After our meeting, I’ll:

✅ Send you a written summary of what we discussed
✅ Provide drafts of your documents for approval
✅ Answer any follow-up questions you may have
✅ Arrange a convenient time for signing your documents (this can be done in person or remotely, with witnesses)

I’ll also offer options for secure Will storage and annual check-ins if you’d like ongoing support.

How Long Does It Take?

Appointments usually take around 90 minutes, depending on the complexity of your estate. For couples or those considering more detailed Trust planning, we may take up to 2 hours to ensure everything is covered properly.
